The christmas party gig was a huge success and very well supported to the extent of being totally packed out;

Incredible debut gig Thursday (20th) with the new Yorkshire Jazz Orchestra played to a full house at Seven Arts in Leeds, apart from some new stuff of mine, music by and featuring brilliant singer Louise Gibbs, and music by Brazillian composer Zezo Olympio. Gig was recorded and filmed so watch out for video clips in due course. I'm still trying to wind down two days later! - Tony Faulkner

"My first visit to Seven Jazz and the gig was fantastic. Lovely friendly venue and under 18s are allowed to listen to great live music. Shame more music venues don't follow suit. Will definitely be back!" - Tracey

"My first visit also to Seven Jazz last night - the gig was out of this world, the musicians were so talented, seen them all seperately, not playing together, thought they were amazing! The venue was full of atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. Looking forward to my next visit" - Pam

“Just wanted to drop by and say thank you for a great gig at the Seven last night.   What an amazing artist Ian Shaw really is and it was so lovely to meet him and hear his critiques at the masterclass beforehand.I had a great night last night, but I always enjoy coming to the Seven.  It's such an amazing space!   I think it's slightly theatrical feel really appeals to my sensibilities, being from that background, I feel so at home there” Beverley

Always pleased to see 'proper' music still being championed! It's a beautiful room to play in! Every success for you in 2011! Billy Jenkins Jan 2011

I meant to send you a message at the end of the last workshop series, to thank for your efforts in putting it together. I know that in some respects these things are not easy, but certainly I greatly appreciated the range of visiting musicians as well as the inputs from Martin & Colin. For me, Michael Janisch's workshop was the most challenging musically but also the one I took most from, possibly because it was very focused on playing the music. Also his recommendation for Mark Levine's Jazz Theory book was an excellent one - I got it & there's a lot to go at in that book but it's highly accessible. So - thanks again  best regards - Ian

Just the best Chapel Allerton Sunday festival jazz ever with the North Leeds Jazz orchestra plus Lindyhopper dancers, Richard Ormrod's  "A Dread Supreme" - dub meets John Coltrane - a great party band, Rod Mason's awesome Elements, Jenny Smith's sextet with Al Morrsion joining in on guitar and Jim Corry blowing an exquisite alto sax, the 'too young to be that good"' Magic Hat ensemble: magic bands, magic weather...

See Mark Beirne-Smith's photos here . Spear in Dread Supreme is the photo above- Sept 9th 2010

"Top drawer line up for the festival.  Great balanced programme.  Lots of good comments from people.  Well done. I was watching the lightness of the drummer's left foot in the 'too young to be that good band' (..Magic Hat..). I have been practicing that technique for 35 years and still can't do it" - Paul

"A fantabulous day of jazz at the festival...many thanks" - Martin

"Top afternoon at the Chapel Allerton Jazz Festival, top acts, brilliant! 'The Magic Hat Ensemble' made it for me though, love these guys....a huge thank you for yesterday afternoon, I stayed for all of the festival and had a great time and I know how hard you must have worked! So, thank you so much for such a great event" - Beverley

"Thanks for Sunday, good stage, crew, crowd and good weather! We all enjoyed playing and then hanging out backstage listening and socialising, a very pleasant afternoon.- Steve Chadwick (Magic Hat)

"The intensity of the positivity of the responsivity was a bit of a surprise, but hell; we like it too! Thanks :-))- Richard Ormrod (Dread Supreme)"

"I'd like to say how much my wife and I enjoyed the Jazz Cafe.  Can't wait for the next one..." John

"'we really enjoyed playing at Seven and look forward to coming back again soon! Gracias La Charanga del Norte

"We all had an amazing time and everyone I spoke to said how great an afternoon they had, not just the music but the whole vibe of Seven Jazz on a Sunday afternoon, a massive thanks to you an your team for putting on and organising such a great afternoon for people" - James Hamilton

"The vibes were good" - Kathy Dyson and Deidre Cartwright

"Just a line to say that the Sunday concerts are an absolute gem! Louise Parker - it's no surprise that Humph took her under his wing. I think she's world class and her group were hot. I hope you get them  back next year .... but it'll probably cost you more! Gary Boyle is another world class musician - today's gig was stirring. Hard to believe it was only their second gig. Seven Jazz - two world class artists within the space of a fortnight. All for £4 each - what more can you say? Amazing!! Seven Jazz are at the centre of a flourishing jazz community in and around Leeds. Thanks again to everyone involved" - Barry

"I've seen some really talented musicians over the past year- keep it up" - Ray

"The Arts Centre and Jazz is a great addition to Chapel Allerton" - Maria

"Great venue. Two second hand CD's for £5 was great!" - Robert

"Enjoy the jam sessions - they let people join in and give a nice variety"- Alison

"Good venue, good music, good food" - Pat and Steve

"What a wang dang doodle gig that was yesterday afternoon - based on previous knowledge, recommendation of others etc, I was expecting a knock-out do but I thought they surpassed all expectations. The only ever so tincy wincy downside was that I did not grab a front-row spot to actually watch James Maddren play - I gather from Tom Gallagher that he was dragging harmonics off his cymbals with his thumb nails and quite how do you brush so brilliantly and dynamically with your sticks under one arm ?? I mean there's not enough fat on him against which to lodge them whilst drumming takes place so it's all musculo-skeletal - it's all bloody impressive. Keep up this good work"  - Martin

"Kit Downes . . . WOW . . . star rating? . . . er, . . . off the scale, I reckon!  I'd travel distances (and I hate travelling) to hear him and the rest of the trio.  Thanks for putting them on"

Just an amazing club, absolutely brilliant- seriously... Liane Carroll

Fantastic venue, lovely place to play - we'll be back! ....Pete King

Our Workshops...

I wanted to let you know that I found the jazz instrumental workshop I attended really excellent - learnt a lot from the different tutors and enjoyed the whole experience including the 'gig' on Sunday. So thank you for your organisation and support.

Paul

Pete Churchill gave a jazz singing workshop at Seven on Saturday 27 February (pictured). It was inspirational. Four hours of superb tuition - here are some of the comments from the 50+ people who were there

Great day - well worth travelling from Hull for!  Can you do it again. please?!

Terrific!

Absolutely marvellous.  Nothing so therapeutic as singing!

It was brilliant.  Please bring him back again!

Fabulous afternoon - would be so great to have a local jazz choir or more of these.

Absolutely brilliant - as an ex-choral singer it was great to loosen up and get a feel for singing jazz/rhythm music.  Thanks!  I will look out for any workshop/courses with Pete as tutor.

Fantastic - bring him back!!"

Pete Churchill's Trio also played at Seven on Thursday 25th February. Steve Watts was on bass, Dave Wickins on drums. Barry Travena said

"This was one of the best jazz gigs I’ve ever been to in my life …. Beautiful relaxed vocals and piano, very solid tuneful bass and the most swinging and sympathetic of drummers. There is a whole world of jazz in this Trio" . Read Barry's full review of the gig here
