The Yorkshire Jazz Orchestra (YJO) started rehearsing in February 2011 and was set up to provide opportunities for musicians in the Yorkshire region to work with and perform original music by musicians and composers of national and international stature, and  with the additional intention of providing a platform for Yorkshire based composers to have their work rehearsed and performed by an Orchestra of high professional standard. The Orchestra’s personnel is drawn from all regions of Yorkshire, including York, Harrogate, Barnsley, Sheffield, Wakefield, Huddersfield, and - of course - Leeds

Director Tony Faulkner is a jazz legend - a fine musician who has built an impressive body of work over the last 50 years. He is a stylish composer and arranger, a great drummer and one of the UK’s foremost experts on the life and work of Duke Ellington. Tony has also enjoyed a long career as a Jazz educator, principally as a tutor at the Leeds College of Music, and has helped many of the finest British Jazz musicians of the last 35 years hone their compositional, performance and ensemble skills. Tony did the arrangements for Alan Barnes "Ellingtonians" when they came to Seven Arts in 2009 example

In its debut performance at Seven Arts, Leeds, on October 20th, the Yorkshire Jazz Orchestra Orchestra will be presenting a two-set programme of new compositions by Brazilian pianist Zezo Olympio - currently based in Yorkshire and featuring the voice of singer Louise Gibbs instrumentally. Louise will also perform some of her original songs and a group of lesser known, though not obscure, standards - all arranged by composer-in residence Tony Faulkner, who will also feature a set of arrangements and compositions in the form of an informal suite dedicated to various heroes (and one heroine), some well known, others totally unknown.

The Yorkshire Jazz Orchestra's debut performance is at Seven Arts on Thursday 20th October 2011, doors open 8pm, tickets £12/10 concessions available from Seven Arts 0113 26 26 777.

Season tickets for all six Seven Jazz autumn concerts from Seven Arts £60 (full price) and £50 (concessions/unwaged), a substantial saving
