“Firefly” – Deidre Cartwright and Kathy Dyson’s tribute to US jazz guitarist Emily Remler

Deirdre and Kathy perform music made famous or inspired by the work of guitarist Remler, who died tragically young but forged a unique career as one of jazz’s few female guitarists. The duo played at Seven in 2010 and have since recorded a highly-praised CD and developed an empathic, joyous sense of swinging interplay.

Emily Remler was a famous jazz guitarist in the 1980s known for her compositions which drew on a variety of styles including bossa, bebop, modal, fusion, and blues. She was known for reharmonizing standards, often in a brooding manner. She was heavily influenced by Wes Montgomery, as well as Charlie Christian, Paul Desmond, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Herb Ellis, Joe Pass and Pat Martino. Remler recorded six albums as a leader. "Firefly", her first and best known album, was recorded in 1981 when she was 23 and included Hank Jones on piano, Bob Maize on bass and Jake Hanna on the drums. Her success was cut short when she died suddenly on May 4, 1990 while on tour in Sydney, Australia. Her death was rumored to be the result of a heroin overdose.

Deirdre Cartwright is a jazz guitarist and composer, and became well known as the guitar presenter of the groundbreaking BBC Television series Rockschool. Kathy Dyson is based at Leeds College of Music with particular interests in performing, research and teaching and as a jazz guitarist performs regularly on gigs in Yorkshire and the North West. These musicians will play Emily Remler's music in this special tribute gig.
