Cannonball Express
Ronnie Bottomley’s tribute to saxman Cannonball Adderley featuring Al Woods on alto sax, Reuben Fowler on trumpet, Ken Marley bass, Nigel Chapman piano and Ronnie Bottomley drums
Cannonball Adderley was one of the giants of the alto saxophone. He was partof the Miles Davis sextet in October 1957, three months prior to John Coltrane's return to the group and played on the seminal Davis records "Milestones" and "Kind of Blue". As band leader The Cannonball Adderley Quintet featured Cannonball on alto sax and his brother Nat Adderley on cornet and pianist Bobby Timmons. His Quintet recorded some of the best known jazz songs - "This Here" (written by Bobby Timmons), "The Jive Samba," "Work Song" (written by Nat Adderley), "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" (written by Joe Zawinul) and "Walk Tall" (written by Zawinul, Marrow and Rein).
Cannonball Express features multi instrumentalist Al Woods on alto sax and Mark Chandler on flugelhorn. Big Ron didn't play at his last band gig at Seven with the Quintessentials (due to a septic hand) but he'll be back for this gig. Listen to Cannonball Adderley on LastFM
