Chapel Allerton Festival: Jazz Sunday 5th September


We’re back again on the afternoon of Sunday 5th September at the 2010 Chapel Allerton Festival in Regent Street, Leeds 12.30 – 5.30pm with an outstanding line up of the some of area’s best and most talented acts. Enjoy the big band sounds of the North Leeds Jazz Orchestra, rising stars (and Jellymould recording artists) the Magic Hat Ensemble, Chapel Allerton’s own jazz vocalist Jenny Smith and her quintet, Rod Mason’s funky “Elements”, and saxman Richard Ormrod with his brand new band “A Dread Supreme” giving John Coltrane the dub treatment. For a £3 contribution this has to be the best value jazz day in the U.K. Not to be missed!

12.30pm North Leeds Jazz Orchestra
The North Leeds Jazz Orchestra are directed by local saxman Martin Townshend and are based at the Carr Manor music centre. They have been regulars at local and community event including an appearance at this year’s Headingley festival

1.30pm Magic Hat Ensemble
The Magic Hat Ensemble are a hard swinging collective of young virtuoso musicians. Their debut album for the Yorkshire based Jellymould Jazz label has been heralded as “sophisticated”, “quirky”, “awesome” and “bursting with ideas”. 2.30pm Jenny Smith Quintet
Chapel Allerton’s own jazz superstar Jenny Smith gigs up and down the country with various jazz ensembles, including the Jenny Smith Quintet, the Derrick Harris band and all girl acapella group Solaris. Aside from jazz Jenny sings with Samzeo, a traditional Georgian folk choir. Her band features Jim Corry alto sax, Al Morrison guitar, Andy Cholerton keyboards, Richard Hammond double bass and Paul Smith drums
3.30pm Richard Ormrod’s “A Dread Supreme”
He’s given us Jazz and cowboys, now John Coltrane gets the dub treatment from Leeds saxman Richard Ormrod in the intriguing new band featuring Richard on tenor, baritone, alto saxes, Simon Pugsley, trombone, Chris Campbell, guitar, Bob Birch, organ, synths, Alex Davis, bass, Spear, percussion, Sam Hobbs, drums
4.30pm Rod Mason’ s Elements

A Seven Jazz favourite with the funky Elements band led by larger than life saxman Rod Mason with Richard Hammond (bass) Richard Wetherall (piano) Dave Walsh (drums) “Mason’s Elements delivers high quality originals with great aplomb – an explosive mix of music and personality!”
Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th September are mainly rock/pop but also check out guitarist Gary Boyle appearing with folk roots band "Sketch" (2pm Saturday), local pan player Dudley Nesbitt with his Caribbean band Pan Jumbi (4pm Saturday) and soul n jazz diva Terry Shaltiel and her band (7pm Saturday).
