Mike Cox Quintet
Sun 24 Oct : Mike Cox tenor sax, Trevor Vincent -trumpet, Andy Cholerton piano, Ken Marley double bass, Paul Smith drums
Mike Cox is a tenor sax player who has graced the Leeds jazz scene now for many years, well known for his work with local big bands, and still playing just as well as ever. The band at Seven will be a bit of a reunion for Mike playing again with trumpeter Trevor Vincent and bassist Ken Marley.
Mike is probably best known by musicians for his time at Leeds College of Music in the 1970's and 1980's where he taught with people like Dick Howden Ronnie Bottomley Brian Layton Freddie Boaden and John Brown. His Wikepedia entry mentions something else - Mike Cox was one of the original members of the band led by John Barry - one of the best known film music composers in the world (think James Bond...). John had served in the army with Mike and contacted him to form his new band. The first line-up was: John Barry (vocals & trumpet), Mike Cox (tenor-sax), Derek Myers (alto-sax), Ken Golder (drums), Fred Kirk (bass guitar), Ken Richards (lead guitar) and Keith Kelly (rhythm guitar). The JB7 appeared on British TV shows such as Six-Five Special & Oh Boy! during 1957 and 1958 before mike left in in 1959.
He's a supporter of Seven Jazz - he's been to our jam sessions (pictured in pink!) and our gigs. It will be good to have him back where he is best - blowing tenor sax with great musicians
