The NY Standards Quartet  features some of the marquee players of their generation.  Although they worked together in different combinations for years in New York, the members of the New York Standards Quartet (NYSQ) formed as a band to tour Japan in 2006, and have been playing for enthusiastic audiences in Japan, the US and Europe ever since. They recently released their second CD, "Unstandard", on Challenge Records - which sold out on their 2011 Tour of Japan. Conceptually, the NYSQ strives to develop its own language by radically reinterpreting music from the standard jazz repertoire, pushing the boundaries of these well-known songs.

Pianist Dave Berkman, Drummer Gene Jackson, Tenor Saxophonist Tim Armacost, and Bassist Mike Janisch, make up the,”New York Standards Quartet”. The band assembled by Tenor sax man Tim Armacost came together in the fall of 2006. As a band the New York based unit have developed a near telepathic relationship playing together in a variety of settings, including in some of the top bands in New York City. Conceptually, the NYSQ strives to develop its own language within the tradition of the standard jazz repertoire.

The bond the group shares is further strengthened by a common love for Japanese culture, food, and language. The band has crisscrossed Japan four times already, in addition to completing its first American tour in March of 2008 and then again in October of 2009.

“These artists clearly relish the opportunity to stretch out, with the knowledge that they are among highly accomplished peers . . . . showing how ‘the standards’ can serve as a foundation for exploration, not just as museum pieces.” —Louisville Music News
