Rafael Karlen is a composer, arranger and jazz saxophonist. He performs in a number of jazz and contemporary music ensembles, and has toured extensively throughout Australia. Since releasing his debut CD in 2009, Australian saxophonist and composer Rafael Karlen has been receiving attention as one of the most important musicians of his generation on the Australian Jazz scene. His album Driving Hat earned him nominations for both Australian Jazz Composition of the Year and Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year Categories at the 2009 Jazz Bell Awards.

Drawing on influences ranging from the music of Keith Jarrett, Wayne Shorter, Kenny Wheeler, Ornette Coleman and Morton Feldman, the quintet will explore intricate compositions with flexibility and freedom, allowing the performers to collectively stretch and contribute.
