Benn Clatworthy Quartet
"Benn and the whole band were brilliant last night in Sheffield- you're in for a treat!"
Sat Oct 30
Benn Clatworthy tenor sax, Cecilia Coleman piano, Simon Thorpe bass, Gene Calderazzo drums
Benn Clatworthy is a truly impressive modern jazz tenor who Ronnie Scott rated as one of the best UK players that he had ever heard. Although British (very!) Benn is now resident in California where he has established himself as an important talent, although he does return to Britain on a regular basis. A powerful and impressive player this is a gig not to be missed. On this visit he has New York pianist Cecilia Coleman, Simon Thorpe on bass and Gene Calderazzo drums. Listen to his music here
Benn Clatworthy is also saxophonist with punch. The Los Angeles-based tenorist, who works out in a boxing gym when off duty, has distilled the early influences of Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Booker Ervin into his own dynamic style which often carries the rhythms of the boxer’s speed bag. Expect exhilarating reworkings of familiar tunes and an expressive flow of fresh ideas when Clatworthy storms into Seven along with New York based Cecilia Coleman on piano, fellow American Gene Calderazzo on drums and Simon Thorpe on double bass.
Cecilia Coleman is truly one of jazz's best kept secrets! "Artistic, talented, dedicated" are but three of the many attributes that describe pianist Cecilia, a native of Long Beach, California and resident of New York. She is a potent pianist capable of performances that are both exciting and moving. She has five CD's out as a leader: "The Impostor","Higher Standards", "Home", "Young & Foolish" and "Words of Wisdom".
