Nicholas Meier group featuring Gilad Atzmon
Thus Nov 11th - Nicolas Meir guitar, Gilad Atzmon sax, Pat Bettison- bass, Asaf Sirkis - drums
Swiss guitarist Nicholas Meier draws on a multitude of influences: jazz, flamenco, latin and middle-eastern music are all passionately explored in a series of heartfelt acoustic modern jazz originals. His trademark sound is mixture of Methenyesque jazz and spicy Turkish and world music rhythms. The Meier group features brilliant Israeli saxophonist Gilad Atzmon, bassist Patrick Bettison and drummer Asaf Sirkis who all contributed to the band's hugely well received Naim label debut ‘Orient’
Meier’s personal world affects his music greatly: his wife Songul is Turkish and he has spent time there and in Spain and the Meier group draws on the melodies and rhythms of both countries. Meier has recently recorded the follow up album to Orient and the album "Yuz" was released on Naim in March 2010. The album again features drummer Asaf Sirkis who has been a major influence on Meier’s recent work (’I always liked Asaf for his timing and his emotion that he put in his drumming. He is a very committed musician and he is very supportive of my writing) as well as Gillad Atzmon of whom Meier says ‘his playing is so full of deep emotion and he just plays such wonderful stories and has such a deep knowledge of different styles. He fits so well with my musical concept".
Other influences include pianist Chick Corea (who moves effortlessly between fusion and acoustic contexts) and of course Pat Metheny (who isn’t? asks Meier) but also the classic guitar album “Friday Night in San Francisco” by Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin.“I loved all the styles they were playing, Latin and tango with Al, Flamenco with Paco, and Indian music with John. Which is one of the reasons that I love all these styles of music and wanted to explore them on this album.” Hear the Meier group at www.meiergroup.com and read more: http://www.myspace.com/themeiergroup
